DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

A descriptive text is a text which lists the characteristics of something. The purpose of this text is to describe a particular person, place or thing. Descriptive text consists of two parts as the generic structure :

• Identification : identifying the phenomenon to be described.
• Description : describing the phenomenon in parts, qualities, or/and characteristics. 

The Language Feature of Descriptive Text :

Focus on specific participants

Using attributive and identifying process
Using adjective and classifiers in nominal group
Using simple present tense

The use of adjectives and compound adjectives :
- A five hundred seated football stadium
- A beautiful ancient Roman opera house
The use of Linking Verbs/ relating verbs :
- The temple is so magnificent
- The temple consists of five terraces
The use of Simple Present Tense :
- The museum houses hundreds of Greek Statues
- The hotel provides 450 rooms and a large swimming pool
The use of degree of comparison :
- The weather in Jakarta is hotter than Bandung
- Bogor has the same weather as Ungaran

An example of descriptive text is:

I have recently lost my dog. He is a big, black and white dog, with a gray spot just above his left ear. He weighs 58 pounds and has black spots on his tongue. He is part Chow and part Shepperd mix. He comes by the name of Sparky.

My Cat

Identification = My cat is a male cat named Pussy.

Description = It has big body with soft white fur. Its eyes are round and big. It has long thick fury tail. It’s face is oval with long whiskers.(Description of Part)

Pussy is a lazy cat but it is very funny. It sleeps during the day. It awakes at eating time only. It doesn’t like playing but it likes laying down on the sofa. Anyway Pussy always makes me smile. Its sound is funny. And it always accompanies me doing my homework. I really love my cat, Pussy.
